CREATING A SELF RELIANT ROCKAWAY COMMUNITY
Through the growth of Rockaway’s CERT and Community Outreach Specialists Ready Rockaway is committed to educating the community on personal emergency preparedness.
BUILDING AND STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS WITH EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS PARTNERS
The mission of Ready Rockaway is to bring together the Rockaway Peninsula’s emergency preparedness and community partners to assess community hazard vulnerability; conduct collaborative planning; educate the local population; and arrange for available resources as needed to support emergency preparedness.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH SPECIALISTS
In the near future, Ready Rockaway will collaborate with American Red Cross in Greater New York in their “training the trainer” program to expand Ready Rockaway’s Community Outreach Specialists. This will allow Ready Rockaway to have quarterly or bi-annual American Red Cross trainings open to the entire community.
CONTINUITY OF OPERATIONS
Ready Rockaway is determined to plan how the Rockaway Peninsula (with emphasis on the Healthcare Facilities) can operate during a man-made or natural disaster. Additionally, the overall goal is to see how quickly Rockaway Peninsula returns to its daily activities.
Ready Rockaway is committed to expanding the Healthcare Coalition by creating MOU’s between ALL healthcare facilities on the Rockaway Peninsula. The Healthcare Coalition will serve as an information clearinghouse for healthcare institution data which will provide information to the state and city agencies, which encourages communication. Additionally, Ready Rockaway will create an Emergency Operation Plan (EOP) and provide trainings and drills on a regular basis to promote sound awareness of the plan and ensure it is operational when an actual event occurs.
HEALTHCARE EVACUATION COORDINATION CENTER (HECC)
READY ROCKAWAY is dedicated to staffing and equipping the HECC. Upon completion of this, Ready Rockaway will host periodic trainings and drills throughout the Rockaway Peninsula.
READY ROCKAWAY/HEALTHY ROCKAWAY
READY ROCKAWAY is working on a model outreach plan to include “Healthy Rockaway”. Two of the lessons learned from Katrina were;
The community had no personal emergency preparedness training
The community residents were sicker than they knew; before, during and after Katrina.
